Joanna Curry

Class of 2014·Inducted in 2025

🏆 Hall of Fame

It is an honor to induct Joanna Curry, Class of 2015, into the Will C. Wood Athletics Hall of Fame — a student-athlete whose excellence in the pool was matched only by her brilliance in the classroom and her impact far beyond high school.

During her four years on Varsity Swim, Joanna established herself as one of the most dominant swimmers in program history. She was a four-time MEL Champion, capturing titles in the 200 IM (2012), 200 Free (2013), 100 Back (2014), and both the 100 Back and 200 Free (2015).  In her final competition as a Wildcat, she brought home the Sac-Joaquin Section 100 Back Championship,  cementing her legacy as one of the premier competitors to ever represent Will C. Wood.

Outside of high school competition, Joanna’s swimming career reached national levels. As a club swimmer, she qualified for Junior Nationals, Nationals, and the prestigious U.S. Open — competing among the best swimmers in the country.

In the classroom, her accomplishments were equally extraordinary. Joanna was a National Merit Scholar and graduated as Salutatorian of the Class of 2015, exemplifying the true meaning of a scholar-athlete.

Joanna continued her athletic and academic journey at Princeton University, where she competed for the Women’s Swimming and Diving team from 2015–2019. She was a two-time team captain, earned MVP honors in 2017 and 2018, and was a two-time Honorable Mention Scholastic All-American. In 2018, she became an Ivy League Champion in the 200 Butterfly, and she remains part of the school record-holding 4×200 freestyle relay team. As a senior, she was awarded the Susan Teeter Award, recognizing the swimmer who distinguishes herself as both an outstanding student and invaluable teammate.

After Princeton, Joanna took a three-year gap before medical school, serving as a clinical research coordinator in pediatric gastroenterology and hepatology, ultimately becoming a senior clinical research coordinator. Her dedication to medicine mirrors the same discipline and drive she demonstrated as an athlete.

Joanna is currently completing her MD at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, graduating in June 2026, while also earning her Master of Public Health from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Her academic achievements include the Viola Hyde Surgical Research Scholarship, the Dr. Robert Hyde Memorial Best Trainee Presentation Award (3rd place), and recognition as a Society for Vascular Surgery Resident/Student Travel Recipient. She is now applying for residency in Vascular Surgery — continuing a journey defined by excellence, leadership, and service.

From MEL Champion to Ivy League Champion. From National Merit Scholar to future vascular surgeon. Joanna Curry embodies what it means to compete with heart, lead with integrity, and pursue greatness in every arena.

Tonight, we proudly welcome Joanna Curry into the Will C. Wood Athletics Hall of Fame.
