Enriqueta “Henrie” Newland
Inducted in 2025
Henrie Newland is honored for her exceptional leadership as principal of Will C. Wood High School and her lasting impact on student-athletes and the broader school community. Through a clear vision, consistent advocacy and an unwavering commitment to students, Henrie’s leadership as a principal strengthened and transformed Will C Wood into the true foundation of Wildcat Family.
Henrie’s journey to educational leadership began in Cuba, where she was a ninth grader before immigrating to the United States in 1960 with limited English and a strong academic foundation. Through perseverance, she graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1964 as a member of the National Honor Society, later earning her bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and credentials from Sacramento State.
As principal, Henrie led Will C. Wood High School with clear and unwavering priorities: ensuring the safety of everyone on campus, hiring educators worthy of the profession, strengthening the school’s identity within the Vacaville community, and supporting every student at every level. These guiding principles shaped the culture of the school and influenced every decision she made.
Henrie was a steadfast advocate for athletics, ensuring that all student-athletes had access to safe and supportive programs. While facilities were limited in the school’s early years, she worked collaboratively with community partners to improve conditions and address safety concerns, always placing student well-being first. Her presence at games and events reflected a principal who valued competition, sportsmanship, and above all else, a genuine concern for the health and well being of every student.
Beyond athletics, Henrie strengthened Will C. Wood High School by building meaningful partnerships with city and county agencies. She took great pride in hiring and mentoring a dedicated staff – many of whom became long-term leaders at the school – and she beams with pride to see alumni return as educators, coaches and athletic directors. As principal of one of Vacaville’s newer high schools, Henrie worked tirelessly to secure community support through service organizations and local businesses, expanding scholarships and launching innovative programs like AVID – now a district wide staple.
Even beyond her retirement, Henrie’s commitment to Will C. Wood High School has never wavered. Year after year, she continues to attend games, concerts, musicals, theatrical productions, alumni events, and Wildcat Night. She considers her staff and students family—celebrating countless weddings and standing in support at far too many funerals. Her dedication extends beyond a title or tenure; it is a lifelong bond rooted in love, loyalty, and community.
Henrie Newland’s induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame honors a principal whose leadership championed students, elevated programs, and helped a young school find its own identity and grow into a thriving community. Her legacy is defined by compassion, integrity, and a steadfast belief in the potential of every student. Henrie has been and always will be the original heart beat of Will C. Wood High school.
