It is with great honor that we introduce Jeffrey Marquez as an inductee into the Will C. Wood High School Athletics Hall of Fame. Marquez’s journey from high school standout to Major League Baseball (MLB) player is a testament to his dedication, perseverance, and immense talent. His accomplishments in professional baseball serve as an inspiration to young athletes, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, dreams can become reality.

After graduating from Will C. Wood High School, Jeff continued his baseball career at Sacramento City College. His continued drive and dedication earned him the 2004 All-Bay Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year and his performance caught the attention of professional scouts. As the first Junior College player picked in the draft, the New York Yankees selected Jeff with the 41st overall pick in the 1st round of the 2004 MLB Draft. This was the beginning of an impressive professional career that would see him compete at the highest levels of the sport.

Jeff quickly made an impact in professional baseball. In his first year in 2004, Jeff went 2-0 with 14 innings, 18 strikeouts and a 0.63 ERA leading to a Gulf Coast League Championship. In 2005, playing for the Single-A Charleston RiverDogs, he established himself as a key player, leading the team with 27 starts. He finished second on the team in wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts, proving himself to be a formidable force on the mound.

In 2007, Jeff took another significant step forward in his career while playing for the Double-A Trenton Thunder. His performance earned him recognition as an Eastern League midseason All-Star. That year, he posted an impressive 15-9 record with a 3.65 ERA, leading the league with 15 wins. He was also tied for first in starts, ranked second in innings pitched, tied for third in complete games, and placed tenth in ERA.. His dominance on the mound was instrumental in the success of the Trenton Thunder that season, winners of the 2007 Eastern League Championship.

In 2008, Jeff split time between Scranton, PA and Trenton, NJ.  Jeff pitched the bulk of the season for the AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees who went on that year to win the International League Championship.  He also pitched in the playoffs for the AA Trenton Thunder, leading to their second-consecutive AA Eastern League Championship. Jeff was later traded to the Chicago White Sox, where he continued to develop as a pitcher. His dream of reaching the Major Leagues became a reality on July 9, 2010, when he made his Major League Baseball debut against the Kansas City Royals. Pitching the ninth inning, he closed out an 8-2 victory for the White Sox, officially marking his entry into the highest level of professional baseball.

Jeff’s career saw him move between several organizations as he continued to pursue excellence. He was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees, later signed with the Seattle Mariners, and played for the Colorado Rockies and ultimately finished his MLB career with the Cincinnati Reds. In 2011, Jeff was selected to represent Team USA at the Pan American Games contested in Panama and Mexico, helping the US squad bring home silver medals. Additionally, in 2016 he expanded his playing experience by competing in the Mexican Baseball League with the Pericos de Puebla, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to the game and finishing his playing career by earning his final championship ring in the league’s World Series.

Jeffrey Marquez’s journey from Will C. Wood High School to the Major Leagues is a story of determination, skill, and unwavering dedication. His achievements serve as a source of pride for his alma mater and a beacon of inspiration for future generations of athletes. It is only fitting that he be honored with induction into the Will C. Wood High School Athletics Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the school’s greatest sports figures.
